When starting a photography business, it can be overwhelming to navigate all the different aspects involved. Here are some key recommendations to help you kickstart your journey into the world of photography entrepreneurship:

Finding a Mentor

Having a mentor can truly make a significant difference in your photography journey. They can provide valuable guidance, share their experiences, and offer support when you encounter challenges. Building a strong relationship with a mentor, can open up a world of knowledge and opportunities. They can help you refine your skills, develop your unique style, and navigate the photography industry.

Don't be afraid to reach out to photographers in your area or even online to find a mentor who resonates with you. Remember, learning from someone who has walked the path before you can accelerate your growth and help you avoid common pitfalls. Investing in yourself and your business by seeking mentorship is a wise decision that can set you on the path to success. Embrace the journey, stay curious, and never stop learning. Your dedication and passion for photography will surely shine through with the right guidance by your side.

Investing in Quality Gear

While you don't need the most expensive equipment when you're just starting out, investing in good quality gear that suits your style and needs can make a significant difference in the quality of your work. Here's what I would recommend:

Camera: Canon EOS R8 Camera body a great full frame mirrorless camera to start your photography journey.

Lens: RF 50mm F1.8 STM This will be perfect for any portrait session and is the perfect lens to start your collection.

Flash: Godox V1c Flash An amazing flash that will last!

SD Cards: SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO  My favorite sd cards.

Bag: Brevite Camera Backpack I have had this backpack since I started and it's been great! Fits all my gear and holds personal belongings easily.

External Drive: LaCie Rugged 5TB Best external hard drive.

Education

Take the time to learn about photography techniques, lighting, composition, and editing. Continuous practice and improvement are key to developing your skills. I personally love Katelyn James! She's a well known family and wedding photographer. When I was starting out I invested in her Lighting and Location Course I believe this made a big difference in my photographs. From the beginning of my photography journey people were shocked I'd only been doing it for 1 month. I credit all my success to this course!

Building your Portfolio

Creating a Photography Portfolio requires dedication and effort. I began by providing complimentary photoshoots to my family and friends. It is crucial to convey the desired atmosphere to your loved ones. Remember, the strength of your portfolio is determined by its weakest image.

Once you have captured a variety of shots and built up your portfolio, it's time to showcase your work to a wider audience. Consider creating a professional website or social media accounts dedicated to your photography.

Business Side

Familiarize yourself with basic business practices such as pricing strategies, contracts, invoicing, and taxes. Having a good grasp of the business side of things is crucial for the success of your photography business. Here are a few programs I use:

Pixieset: This is my one stop shop for my website, contracts, client management, and gallery delivery. I love how easy and seamless everything is.

Lightroom LrC: I use this software to edit all my photos.

Canva: Great for creating graphics for your business, client guides, and instagram templates!

FloDesk: An email template and management system.

Instagram: Social Media is a powerful tool that allows you access to clients in and outside of your area. With proper marketing strategies your reach is infinite!

Customer Service

A large part of building your business is creating an exceptional client experience. Treat your clients with professionalism, respect, and care. Building strong relationships with your clients can lead to repeat business and positive referrals.

Stay Inspired

Continuously explore fresh ideas, techniques, and styles by participating in workshops and photography events to stay motivated and enhance your skills as a photographer. Engage in networking events to build relationships with other business owners! These relationships you build will help keep you motivated!
